Open 2nd MAW Unit PageKane “Hollywood” West was born in 1992 in a small town in Texas. He graduated at the top of his high school class and went on to play football at the University of Texas, where he built the competitive discipline, physical toughness, and leadership presence that later shaped his Marine Corps career.
After college, West joined the United States Marine Corps and completed Officer Candidates School in July 2025. He later earned the callsign “Hollywood” because he lived off base in Hollywood, away from the Marines swarming Oceanside. Commissioned as a second lieutenant, he entered the ground reconnaissance community and served as a platoon commander with 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion during combat operations in Afghanistan. During the deployment to Helmand Province, West led Marines through deliberate attacks, clearance operations, reconnaissance missions, and direct action against hostile enemy forces. All deployment-era actions, citations, and combat records are carried as 2ndLt West. He was promoted to 1stLt in December 2025 after returning from deployment.
His deployment record is defined by command under pressure, including the actions near Outpost “Wyoming,” where his reconnaissance team was compromised and came under intense enemy fire. Despite being wounded, West directed the withdrawal and assisted the extraction of injured teammates. His combat leadership during this period was recognized through valor and unit-level citations connected to 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion and SOTF MISFIT.
Following his ground reconnaissance service, West continued to develop Marines through command and training billets. In April 2026, he transitioned into Marine aviation and became an AH-1S Cobra attack helicopter pilot with HMLA-269 under the Gunrunners identity. He now brings a reconnaissance officer’s field discipline into attack aviation, serving as a Cobra pilot and aviation training officer while carrying the callsign “Hollywood.”

THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY HAS AWARDED THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL WITH "V" DEVICE TO SECOND LIEUTENANT KANE WEST, UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS
For valorous actions while serving as an Infantry Officer (0302), Platoon Commander, in support of operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, from June 2025 to September 2025. Second Lieutenant West skillfully supervised the training, discipline, and professional development of a platoon of Marines forward-deployed to numerous hostile areas. He planned, coordinated, and led more than 150 deliberate attacks and clearance operations against enemy compounds and contested terrain, degrading enemy capabilities and maintaining control of multiple areas of operations across Helmand Province. Through his clear-sighted leadership, tactical acumen, and tenacious perseverance, his organization inflicted substantial losses on enemy forces—resulting in over 1,500 confirmed enemy killed—and liberated more than 300 Afghan civilians while contributing to the safety and security of thousands more.
While routinely performing duties in excess of his grade and functioning in the capacity of a company-grade commander, Second Lieutenant West coordinated complex assaults and reconnaissance operations across multiple areas of responsibility, often while constrained by limited air support and logistic resources. He repeatedly identified and exploited vulnerabilities in enemy plans, producing decisive operational opportunities that preserved allied freedom of maneuver. On one occasion near Outpost “Wyoming,” his four-man reconnaissance team was compromised and came under intense small-arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire. Despite sustaining wounds, Second Lieutenant West exposed himself repeatedly to hostile fire to direct the tactical withdrawal and personally assist the extraction of injured teammates, actions that prevented additional casualties and ensured the survival of his men.
Second Lieutenant West's conspicuous gallantry, intrepidity in action, and selfless devotion to the welfare of his Marines reflect great credit upon himself, 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, and the United States Marine Corps.
