Silvia’s record combines infantry weapons experience, small-unit leadership, recruiting duties, and instructor responsibilities. His 0352 record identifies him with anti-armor and missile employment, while his 8411 role records the recruiting lane and Marine development mission. His personal history ties Fall River, JROTC leadership, recruit training, Afghanistan service, and continued active-duty mentorship into one NCO profile.
William “Bill” Silvia was born in Fall River, Massachusetts. Growing up as a Good Rat with a reputation as a problem child, he was placed into military-style behavior and structure programs that changed the direction of his life. What started as discipline became purpose, and he learned that standards, accountability, and a chain of command gave him something to build toward.
In high school, Silvia joined JROTC and excelled in the program. He graduated as a Cadet Command Sergeant Major, already committed to a life built around leadership, field discipline, and service. By 2025, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and earned the callsign “Moto” during recruit training for his visible enthusiasm, aggressiveness, and attachment to Marine identity.
Silvia’s infantry record places him with 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines. As an 0352 Anti-Tank Missile Gunner with 0311 Rifleman ADMOS experience, his profile emphasizes target identification, anti-armor employment, crew coordination, patrol movement, and integration with rifle and weapons-company elements. His current record also includes 8411 Recruiter, Squad Leader, and Combat Instructor duties.
During Afghanistan operations, then-Corporal Silvia served as a squad leader and missileman near Objective “South Dakota” in Helmand Province. His citation records repeated movement under hostile fire, reinforcement of other elements, and leadership during the extraction and protection of wounded Marines. That deployment record includes the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with “V” Device and the Purple Heart.
Silvia remains on active duty as a Sergeant of Marines, working alongside new Marines and helping train them for the future of the Corps he chose as his own.
Display follows the profile’s badge precedence: parachutist qualification is shown before marksmanship, with rifle expert recorded after breast insignia and qualification badges.

THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY HAS AWARDED THE NAVY AND MARINE CORPS COMMENDATION MEDAL WITH “V” DEVICE TO CORPORAL BILL SILVIA, UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS
For heroism while serving as a Squad Leader, Missileman (0352), with 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines in the vicinity of South Dakota, Helmand Province, Afghanistan, on 6 July 2025.
While participating in a reconnaissance patrol to gather intelligence on enemy activity near Objective “South Dakota,” Corporal Silvia's unit came under intense hostile fire from a platoon-sized enemy force employing small arms and rocket-propelled grenades. Demonstrating conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in the face of the enemy, Corporal Silvia repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to lead multiple assault and clearance patrols into enemy compounds, decisive actions that disrupted enemy operations and facilitated the extraction and safety of wounded Marines.
Without regard for his own safety, he consistently reinforced other units on missions for which he had not been specifically trained and was repeatedly the first Marine to volunteer for the most hazardous assignments. His leadership, quick tactical decision-making under fire, and steadfast commitment to the welfare of his Marines directly contributed to mission success and minimized further casualties. Corporal Silvia's actions reflect great credit upon himself, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, and the United States Naval Service.
